Premax Essential Massage Cream 400g (1)

Premax Essential Massage Cream is a medium resistance cream in a 400g tub, made in Australia for hands-on treatment work. Premax describes it as having "an ideal balance of traction and glide". That balance means enough grip to work into a muscle and enough glide to keep the stroke moving. It has more resistance than the lotion and less than the Original cream.

What is in it

The manufacturer ingredient list leads with sweet almond oil, then purified water, petrolatum, castor seed oil, lanolin wax and beeswax, with aloe vera, vitamin E, shea butter and cocoa butter further down. The scent comes from sweet orange and tangerine peel oils, with patchouli and ylang ylang, which Premax calls "an uplifting natural citrus scent". Premax states the range is "Tested on Athletes not Animals".

Check the ingredient list before use if allergies matter for you or your clients. Sweet almond oil is tree nut derived and the highest-inclusion ingredient, and the formula also contains lanolin wax and limonene.

Choosing across the Premax range

Our Premax massage range runs to three products that differ by resistance, and availability can vary by product. Premax Massage Lotion 1 Litre has the most glide, which Premax calls its "highest glide product", and is unscented. Essential gives more resistance than the lotion. Premax Original Massage Cream 400g is the firm option, which Premax describes as "a premium massage cream with a firm resistance", suited to isolated areas or where traction is required on the skin.

Who it suits

It suits hands-on treatment work in massage, physiotherapy and sports settings, and at home. Premax suggests Essential where you want a middle ground of grip and glide, naming hairy legs and the middle back. Our guide to managing common sports injuries covers what clubs see most often.

How to use it

Premax directs 1 to 2 fingertips for small areas and 3 to 4 for medium or large areas, and cautions against using too much. Spread over your palms, apply with broad strokes, work through your techniques, reapply as required. Premax notes only a very thin film should remain at the end of treatment, and directs that you wipe the area with a towel.

Premax is founded and led by Randall Cooper, a Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, who Premax says "plays an active role in all our product development".
