Wellness Beyond the Basics: Exploring Advanced NDIS Supplies for Enhanced Health and Comfort
Every month the same question comes up: are the pads, dressings or gloves you already buy actually claimable under your plan? For a lot of participants and the people who support them, the answer is yes. NDIS funding covers many of the everyday NDIS supplies people use to manage a disability at home, from wound care to continence aids and daily living consumables. The hard part is knowing what fits your plan and how to order it without the guesswork.
First Aid Distributions is an Australian first aid and medical supply company based in East Bendigo, Victoria. We stock a wide NDIS and disability support range and deliver across the country, so participants and support coordinators can order what they need from one place. Here is a plain look at the supplies NDIS participants use most, and how to order them with your plan.
How NDIS funding covers everyday supplies
Most everyday disability-related items are funded through the Core supports budget, under the Consumables category. These are items you use regularly to manage a disability-related need, such as continence aids, wound dressings and some daily living aids, and they're funded in Core regardless of per-item cost. Related low-cost aids, generally up to around $1,500, can usually be bought without lengthy approval, which keeps the consumables budget flexible. The NDIS support budgets guide sets out how the four budgets and support categories work.
What you can claim depends on your plan and how it's managed. Self-managed and plan-managed participants generally have more flexibility in where they buy, while agency-managed plans purchase from registered providers. The test the NDIS applies is whether an item is reasonable and necessary and directly related to your disability. Plan rules can be hard to pin down, and you're not expected to have them memorised, so if you're not sure whether something fits, your support coordinator or plan manager is the best place to start.
One point worth knowing: the NDIS does not usually fund everyday vitamins or general medicines. Some nutrition products can be funded when they're prescribed and clearly linked to a disability, but they're treated differently to standard consumables.
The NDIS supplies participants use most
Wound care and dressings
Many participants manage wounds that need regular dressing changes, and a steady supply of the right dressing is often the difference between a calm routine and a scramble. We stock a range of wound care products, including dressings, tapes and cleaning supplies suited to different wound types. Therapeutic goods such as wound dressings are regulated in Australia, and products listed on the ARTG meet the requirements for supply here. If you're managing a complex or slow-healing wound, follow the advice of the health professional overseeing your care when choosing products.
Continence products
Continence aids are one of the most common consumables funded under the NDIS. Pads, pull-ups and bed protection help people stay comfortable and confident through the day and overnight. One thing to check: NDIS continence funding applies where the incontinence is related to a disability and the participant meets the scheme's eligibility, including the under-65 age rule. People outside that, such as someone over 65, may be supported through other schemes instead, so it's worth confirming with your plan manager or coordinator.
You can browse continence products on our site, and our continence brand, Comfort First, carries a wider continence range if you need more options.
Everyday medical and daily living consumables
Beyond wound care and continence, participants often need general consumables: gloves, sanitiser, basic mobility and daily living aids, and similar items. Our medical supplies and equipment range covers a broad spread of these everyday products. A support worker restocking gloves and sanitiser for a shift, for instance, can pick up the lot in one order, which saves the back-and-forth of sourcing from several suppliers.
First aid kits
A well-stocked first aid kit matters in any home, and more so where someone has higher support needs. Our first aid kits come in sizes to suit a household, a vehicle or a support worker's bag. Keeping one within reach, and checking it now and then, means you're ready if something goes wrong.
Ordering supplies with your NDIS plan
The way you order depends on how your plan pays. Self-managed participants pay and claim the cost back. Plan-managed participants have their plan manager settle the invoice. Agency-managed participants order through registered providers, with the NDIA paying directly.
