A snake bite an hour from help means getting a pressure immobilisation bandage on correctly and keeping the person still, so the kit you reach for has to make that easy. This pocket kit is built around two premium compression bandages designed for pressure immobilisation bandaging, with a marker to time the bite and tape to secure, in a belt-loop case the size of your palm.

The kit carries two snake bite bandages with a built-in compression indicator, so you can apply the right pressure for pressure immobilisation bandaging without guessing. A permanent marker lets you note the bite site and time on the bandage for the ambulance, a non-adherent dressing covers the bite, and transpore tape secures the wrapping. Pressure immobilisation is the recommended response for Australian snakes, blue-ringed octopus, cone fish and funnel-web spider bites.

The case measures 15cm x 13cm x 6cm with a hard-wearing zip-lock design and a belt loop, so it clips to a pack or belt and the contents stay put on the trail. It is small enough to carry every time you head bush, which is the point of a snake bite kit.

We design and assemble this kit in-house in Bendigo, and FAD carries replacement snake bite bandages to restock it after use or expiry through the one account. Family-owned since 2011, with phone advice on 03 5443 2239, FAD backs the kit with people who know the range, which a generic marketplace listing of a snake bite kit does not.

Usage

For a suspected snake or funnel-web spider bite, apply the compression bandage firmly over the bite and then up the whole limb, using the indicator marks to gauge pressure, and keep the person as still as possible while you call 000. Mark the bite site and time on the bandage. Do not wash the bite. Check the kit before each trip and replace the bandages if used or past their expiry.

Care and storage

Store out of direct heat and sunlight and keep the kit somewhere you will carry it every time you head outdoors. Replace the snake bite bandages at expiry so the compression performs as intended.

Common questions

What bites is this kit for? Pressure immobilisation bandaging is recommended for Australian snakes, blue-ringed octopus, cone fish and funnel-web spider bites.

Why two bandages? Two bandages let you wrap a full limb correctly, and give a spare for a longer limb or a second application.

How do I restock it? Order replacement snake bite bandages through FAD in the one account.
