The Philips HeartStart HS1 is a semi-automatic defibrillator built for use by minimally trained or untrained responders. It delivers a shock at the press of a button and uses plain voice prompts to guide a responder through each step of defibrillation and CPR. The unit (order code M5066A) ships with its carry case, ready to mount or store where a workplace, club, school or public venue needs an AED on hand.

The adult SMART Pads cartridge comes pre-installed, so the unit is ready to use without fitting pads first in an emergency. The standard M5071A adult pads cover patients 8 years of age and older or 25 kg and over. An optional Infant/Child SMART Pads cartridge (M5072A, by prescription) lets the HS1 deliver paediatric energy for patients under 8 years or under 25 kg, with the unit adjusting its output to suit.

How it works in an emergency

The HS1 uses a truncated exponential biphasic waveform, with parameters adjusted to each patient's impedance. Adult therapy delivers a nominal peak current of 32 A (150 J nominal into a 50-ohm load); with the optional Infant/Child cartridge fitted, paediatric therapy delivers 16 A (50 J nominal). Quick Shock can deliver a shock after the last chest compression of a CPR interval, typically in 8 seconds, and the cycle time between shocks in a series is typically under 20 seconds.

Maintenance and readiness

The HS1 runs automatic self-tests of its internal circuitry, waveform delivery system, pads cartridge and battery capacity, so the unit checks its own readiness between uses. The M5070A battery is a 9 V DC, 4.2 Ah disposable long-life lithium manganese dioxide pack rated for a minimum of 200 shocks or 4 hours of operating time (EN 60601-2-4:2003), with a typical four-year standby life when installed by its install-by date. The defibrillator and its accessories are made of latex-free materials.

Compliance

Always read the instructions for use. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.

The HS1 sits alongside the rest of our defibrillator range, and pairs with the consumables and accessories you will want to keep with it: spare pads, a replacement M5070A battery, and a wall cabinet. We are an Australian owned and run business, family-owned since 2011, dispatching nationally from our East Bendigo warehouse and Sydney fulfilment centre, and you can call 03 5443 2239 to talk through AED placement and which pads cohort you need before you order. For sites planning AED placement against their obligations, our workplace first aid compliance guide covers where AEDs fit, and our article on defibrillator training in high-risk workplaces covers keeping responders ready to use one.
