The Philips HeartStart FRx is a portable automated external defibrillator (AED) built for rescue by people who are not clinicians. In sudden cardiac arrest it talks the responder through each step with voice prompts, paces compressions with an audible metronome, and analyses the heart rhythm to decide whether a shock is needed. It is supplied here with a carry case.

The FRx is a semi-automatic AED. It will not deliver a shock on its own: it advises the responder when a shock is needed and prompts them to press the button. Pre-connected SMART Pads II stay attached and ready, so there is no separate step to plug pads in under pressure. The same pads are used for both adults and children, which removes the need to store and find a second pad set in an emergency.

For an infant or child, the responder inserts the Infant/Child Key. This lowers the delivered energy to a paediatric setting (the manufacturer states a nominal 50 joules for paediatric use against 150 joules nominal for adults) and switches the device to paediatric guidance. Knowing the adult-versus-child distinction matters: the key is what tells the FRx it is treating a child, and it should be in place before pads are applied to a young patient.

The unit is made to survive the places an AED actually lives. Philips rates it to withstand drops from 1.2 metres, a 500-pound crush load, and dust and water jets to IPX5, and it weighs about 1.5 kilograms with the battery and pads case fitted. A disposable lithium battery (model M5070A) carries a manufacturer-stated typical four-year installed life, and the FRx runs automatic daily self-tests to check pad readiness and verify its own circuits, so a green-ready device is one you can trust at the wall.

The FRx suits workplaces, schools, community venues and other public settings where a trained first aider, not a paramedic, will be first on scene. Pairing the device with regular defibrillator training and current CPR skills gives a site the best chance of acting fast. Schools weighing their options can read our state-by-state guide to choosing a school defibrillator, and you can compare units and accessories in our defibrillators and AED accessories range.

First Aid Distributions has been family-owned since 2011 and ships nationally from our East Bendigo warehouse and Sydney fulfilment centre. Buying the FRx through a single account means you can put the device, replacement pads, batteries and your wider workplace or school first aid supply on one order, with phone advice on 03 5443 2239 from people who know the range.

Compliance

Always read and follow the manufacturer's Instructions for Use. The FRx is a defibrillator for use in a suspected cardiac arrest. In an emergency, call triple zero (000) immediately, start CPR, and use the defibrillator as the voice prompts direct. Training in defibrillator and CPR use is strongly recommended before an emergency occurs.
