Durafiber is a gelling fibre dressing from Smith & Nephew, made for moderately to heavily exuding wounds. On contact with wound fluid the fibres absorb the exudate and turn into a soft, cohesive gel that sits against the wound bed. It comes in flat pads and a rope format for cavity wounds, across seven sizes.
As the dressing takes up fluid it forms a gel sheet that holds its shape. Smith & Nephew states the dressing keeps a high wet strength, so in most cases it lifts away in one piece at a dressing change rather than breaking apart. Wear time is up to seven days, guided by the wound and the level of exudate, and the dressing is changed sooner if it reaches capacity or clinical review calls for it.
Durafiber is a gelling fibre dressing used in chronic and surgical wound care where exudate needs managing. Smith & Nephew make it from cellulose ethyl sulphonate (CES) fibres, their own gelling fibre construction. For background on matching a dressing to the wound, see our guide to dressings for chronic wounds and the wound care and injury guidance page.
