The Body Assist Thumb Abduction Splint supports and stabilises the thumb at the metacarpal joint after a sprain or strain. It holds the thumb in a set position while you recover, and takes interchangeable rigid or pliable stays so you can adjust how much support you get.

Key details: two sizes, S/M and L/XL, chosen by wrist measurement. Contains rubber and latex. Fits fingers as well as thumbs, and takes rigid or pliable stays.

Features and benefits

  • Interchangeable rigid and pliable stays, so you start with a firm hold and switch to the pliable stay as movement returns
  • Designed to limit thumb movement, so a healing sprain or strain is not aggravated in everyday use
  • Adjustable straps and a single wrist panel, quick to fit and adjust one-handed
  • Supports the thumb and wrist together, steadying the joint while the hand stays usable
  • Suits skier's thumb, bowler's thumb and general thumb pain or swelling
  • Fits fingers as well as thumbs, so one splint covers more than one digit

Indications

  • Overuse syndrome.
  • Trigger thumb and skier's thumb.
  • Bowler's thumb.
  • General injuries to the first metacarpal joint.
  • Arthritic discomfort.
  • Tendonitis.
  • Carpal tunnel.

Care

  • Hand wash in warm water.
  • Use a mild detergent.
  • Do not bleach, tumble dry, or dry clean.
  • Hang to air-dry in a well ventilated area.

Instructions for use

  • Adjust the smaller strap to comfortably fit the thumb or finger.
  • Select the desired splint, rigid or pliable.
  • Insert it into the pocket provided. Use the rigid splint for maximum stabilisation in the earlier stages of an injury, or the pliable stays when you want more movement and less stability.
  • Insert your digit into the smaller closed loop at the top of the brace.
  • Firmly close the wrist panel and adjust for comfort.
  • The brace can be used for all fingers as well as thumbs.
  • Do not apply it so tightly that it restricts circulation.
  • You should now feel a level of support and stability along the outside of the thumb.

Choosing your size

Sizing is by wrist measurement, not thumb length. Measure around the centre of your wrist: up to 19cm (7.5 inches) takes the S/M, and 19cm or more takes the L/XL. If you measure right on 19cm or expect some swelling, choose the L/XL, because a splint done up too tightly can restrict circulation. The size chart on this page shows the measurement, and you can call us on 03 5443 2239 if you are unsure before ordering.
