Bio Hazard Supplies for Your Lab

Our range of portable biohazard kits suits most labs and research facilities. Each of our biohazard kits includes a contents list, but if you need help with your selection, then please get in touch with First Aid Distributions.

Things To Consider When Selecting a Bio Hazard Kit

Medical or research activities can pose serious health risks to employees, depending on what kind of waste is being generated. Biohazard material could be viral, bacterial, or toxic. Workplace biohazard kits should be well-stocked and readily available on-site at all times. Every team should have easy access to a fully stocked supply. The kits should be checked regularly to ensure that no items are running low on stock. This should be the responsibility of a designated health and safety officer. All staff members should be trained to be able to deal with both minor incidents and emergencies.

What is biohazardous waste?

If a waste meets any of the criteria below, it is usually labeled a biohazardous waste:

  • Potentially contaminated laboratory waste including human or animal cultures and culture dishes and devices used in lab work

  • Potentially infectious surgery or autopsy specimens or tissues

  • Potentially contaminated body parts, fluids, carcasses, blood or blood products, and all the equipment used to handle these

  • Medical waste involving sharps and other devices used for diagnosis, treatment, or immunisation of humans or animals

Biohazardous waste disposal

Be sure to follow all regulations and check with local sanitary agencies for approval before disposal of biohazardous waste. In general, solid waste should be sterilized before disposal. Liquid waste must be inactivated using appropriate chemical disinfection before discharge to the sanitary sewer.

Are You Low, Moderate, or High risk?

It is recommended to carry out a biohazard risk assessment of your workplace. The idea is to determine the type of hazards your workers face and what kind of equipment you should keep on site. First of all, it is essential to decide whether your lab is considered low, moderate, or high risk:

  • Biohazard Level 1: you work with bacteria and viruses not known to consistently cause disease in healthy adult humans. Examples include Escherichia coli or varicella (chickenpox)

  • Biohazard Level 2: you work with bacteria and viruses known to cause mild disease in humans. Examples include measles, salmonella, influenza A strains.

  • Biohazard Level 3: you work with bacteria and viruses known to cause severe or fatal disease in humans, but for which already exists a cure or a vaccine. Examples include anthrax, tuberculosis, and malaria.

  • Biohazard Level 4: you work with bacteria and viruses that are likely to cause severe or fatal human disease for which no treatment is currently available. Examples include Ebola virus and other hemorrhagic diseases.
